Advanced Search Tips

Use the OWWL Catalog Advanced Search screen to perform complex searches by: combining different types of search terms, specifying the types of materials you want, and adjusting the order of your result list.

Tips:

Search for Kids' Materials

  1. From OWWL.org home or the Online Catalog, click Advanced Search
  2. Set Search Filter > Audience = Juvenile
  3. Set other Search Filters as useful, for example:
    • Literary Form = Non Fiction
  4. Enter Search Input terms
  5. click Submit Search

Search for All Items of a Particular Type

This search can be done from the OWWL.org home or the OWWL Catalog quick search; however, using Advanced Search will allow you to select other filters (for example, you want only juvenile DVDs) and sort your result list (for example, you wish to see all DVDs in order by title.)

  1. From OWWL.org home or the OWWL Catalog, click Advanced Search
  2. In the Search Input area, enter the desired format as a keyword search, for example:
    • Keyword Contains: DVD
    • Keyword Contains: Blu-ray
    • Keyword Contains: Xbox
  3. In the Sort Criteria area, select a sort option for your list:
    • Title
    • Author
    • Publication Date
    • Ascending / A to Z
    • Descending / Z to A
  4. Click Submit Search

Find Only Things On the Shelf at Your Library

This is the "immediate gratification" search - either you are at the library or plan to stop by the library to pick up a DVD for Friday movie night, you want things on the shelf, right now.

  1. From OWWL.org home or the OWWL Catalog, click Advanced Search
  2. Enter your Search Input terms
  3. Set any applicable Search Filters
  4. Set preferred results list Sort Criteria
  5. Select your library from the Search Library list
  6. Click Limit to Available
  7. Click Submit Search

If you plan to visit the library later, call your local library so that they can retrieve the item and have it waiting for you.
